From the very beginnings of the medium, translation has conquered language and cultural barriers and facilitated the dissemination of films. When film was brought into China at the end of the nineteenth century, live interpretation was often provided to help the Chinese audience to understand “western shadow plays”. Various forms of film translation, such as interpretation, voiceover, subtitling and dubbing have helped the cross-cultural communication between China and the world. Translated foreign films have become an integral part of Chinese cinemas and translated Chinese films have in turn enriched the concept of world cinema.
